How long is an appointment?

How many times will I have to go?

That depends on your needs. Some people have regular treatment; others come only once. On average, 3 to 6 treatments will make a significant difference.

How soon will I feel better?

Often patients feel an improvement at the end of the first treatment, although there can also be some stiffness or soreness from the treatment for about 24hrs. Those who are in a lot of pain before the treatment are likely to take longer to improve.

I only have a little ‘niggle’ – is it worth seeing an osteopath?

Yes! It is a sign that something is not right, and addressing the issue as soon as possible will mean needing less treatment to resolve things. Waiting until you are in a lot of pain is not helpful to you or the osteopath.

My pain comes & goes – what if it is not there when I see the osteopath?

Don’t worry, we will still be able to detect the patterns in your body, and establish what needs to be treated. As above, the less pain you are in, the more we can achieve in one session.

Do I have to undress?

To conduct the evaluation, you will be asked to undress down to underclothes. If this is a problem for you, please mention this to the osteopath, who will try to accommodate your preferences without limiting your treatment.

Will the treatment hurt?

Generally no. However if you are in a lot of pain, just moving on the table can be uncomfortable. We will always aim to work within your tolerance. Gentle approaches can be used when the tissues are tender (or if you are feeling ‘fragile’). You may experience some soreness or stiffness as a result of treatment, but this is usually modest and limited to the first 24hrs, and resolves to an improved situation as the tissues accommodate the changes made. If you have any anxieties regarding this (or any other aspect of treatment) please feel free to discuss this with the osteopath.

Will the osteopath ‘crack’ my back?

The technique which makes the ‘cracking’ noise can be particularly effective. It is not always the treatment that is appropriate for your condition. Even if it is, you can choose not to have this approach. Just let the osteopath know, and they will work around it.

Are treatments covered by my Health Insurance?

Some policies cover osteopathy, and with some you can self refer (come directly to us). I no longer work with BUPA or AXAPPP due to their restrictive contracts. Check with your provider first.

Do I have to see my GP?

No, you do not have to see your GP (unless you need referral under the terms of your health insurance). We would always recommend you let your Doctor know you have been to see us when you next visit them. We would not write to your GP ourselves except in special circumstances, which would be fully discussed with you beforehand.
